SNE Research: global EV battery usage for 2022

8 February 2023, 05:18:49

SNE Research: global EV battery usage for 2022According to SNE Reasearch, the global battery usage for 2022 has been 518GWh - a 517.9% growth YoY. For this year, the research agency expects 749 GWh of batteries to be deployed in EVs, PHEVs, and HEVs.

Being a South Korean company, SNE Research pays special attention to the three local companies that are major players in the EV battery market - Samsung SDI, SK On, and LG Energy Solution. Their production is growing but the market share is slightly decreasing in 2022 compared to 2021. LGES is second in the market and the domestic leader. In 2021 it has deployed 59.4 GWh and in 2022 - 70.4 GWh. This is an increase by 18.5% but the market share of the company has fallen to 13.6% in 2022 compared to 19.7% in 2021. SK On is second in the domestic market and fifth globally. It has deployed 17.3 GWh in 2021 and 27.8 GWh in 2022 which is a 61.1% increase. Still, its market share has slightly decreased to 5.4% in 2022 from 5.7% in 2021. The third Sout Korean player is Samsung SDI which is also sixth in the global market. It has deployed 14.5 GWh of batteries in 2021 and 24.3 GWh in 2022 - an increase of 68.5%. Again, its market share decreases very slightly to 4.7% in 2022 from 4.8% in 2021. The growth of the three domestic companies is mainly driven by sales of batteries for pure EVs. SK-On stood out for its sales of the Hyundai IONIQ 5, Kia EV6, and Ford F-150 Lightning. Samsung SDI supplies Audi e-Tron models, BMW i4, and BMW iX. LG Energy Solution Growth was driven by strong sales of the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y, Volkswagen ID.4, and Ford Mustang Mach-E.

The global market leader is CATL with 99.5 GWh deployed in 2021 and 191.6 GWh of batteries s deployed in 2022. That's a staggering increase of 92.5% YoY. The market share of the company has also increased from 33% to 37%. This growth is due to supplying Tesla Model 3 and Model Y, GAC Aion Y, and Geely ZZEKR 001. BYD, which is globally third, also records an impressive growth of 167.1% in batteries deployed - 26.4 GWh in 2021 and 70.4 GWh in 2022. Its market share has almost doubled from 8.7% to 13.6%. BYD's growth is due to supplying its own vehicles - YUan, Han, and Qin PLUS EV as well as other BEV and PHEV models in China. Panasonic is fourth with a 4.6% YoY growth in deployed batteries and a drop in market share from 12% to 7.3%.

The other players that form the first 10 in the EV batteries market are CALB, Guoxuan, Sunwoda, and Farasis. The latter supplies with batteries the Mercedes EQ models in Europe.Source
