CATL has begun mass production of its Gen 5 LFP batteries

CATL, the world's largest power battery manufacturer, has begun mass production of its fifth-generation lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, marking a major step forward in energy density and cycle life. Robin Zeng, the company's founder, chairman, and CEO, announced the milestone at the 2025 World Power Battery Conference in Yibin, Sichuan, highlighting CATL's continued leadership in advancing battery technology.

Zeng noted that CATL's fourth-generation LFP batteries, already in mass production, outperform mainstream second- and third-generation products in terms of energy density, lifespan, and power output. He emphasized that CATL also maintains long-term leadership in ternary chemistry batteries, which are widely used in the company's Qilin and Freevoy battery lines.

Earlier this year, CATL introduced the Naxtra sodium-ion battery, designed to reduce reliance on lithium resources while improving safety and lowering carbon emissions. These sodium-ion batteries also overcome the low-temperature performance challenges of traditional lithium batteries, opening new opportunities for electric vehicle adoption in colder, high-latitude regions. Zeng added that CATL's research into all-solid-state batteries places the company among the global leaders in this emerging field.

According to data from South Korea's SNE Research, CATL held a 36.6 percent global market share from January to September, securing its position as the top battery manufacturer worldwide. In China, the company led the EV battery market in October with 36.14 GWh of installed capacity, representing 43% of the market. CATL also dominated the ternary lithium battery segment with a 72.79% share and accounted for 35.71% of the LFP battery market. CATL contributed 116 GWh to China's nearly 199 GWh of lithium battery exports, accounting for 58.3% in the first three quarters of the year.
