Polestar 2 debuts in China, local production is planned for early 2020

Polestar 2 debuts in China, local production is planned for early 2020Volvo has announced the Polestar 2 at the end of February this year and now the all-electric car has debuted in Shanghai, China. Polestar confirmed that production of the model will take place in Luqiao, Zhejiang Province, from early 2020. Owned by Zhejiang Geely Holding and operated by Volvo Cars, the Luqiao production facility will produce Polestar 2 alongside other world-class models from Volvo and Lynk & Co. In addition, the first Polestar Space in China will be opened in the third quarter of 2019. Around 20 facilities spread between 11 Chinese cities will be opened during 2020 - about one-third of all initial Polestar Spaces expected to be opened globally.

Polestar 2 is a four-door fastback with a panoramic sunroof. It is equipped with a 78 kWh battery consisting of 324 cells in 27 modules, which provides a WLTP range of 500 km. The battery is sealed in an aluminium case. It is fitted under the floor at the base of the vehicle to form a super-stiff car body, which is also crucial for the agile sporty driving style of the car. There are two identical motors - one on the front and one on the back, each with 150 kW power and 300 Nm torque. Hence, the total power and torque measure 300 kW and 660 Nm. The 0-100 km/h acceleration is less than 5 seconds.

"Being able to produce Polestar 2 in the Luqiao plant in China shows the clear synergies of our ownership structure and gives us a great industrial advantage," comments Thomas Ingenlath, Chief Executive Officer at Polestar. "With Geely and Volvo Cars as our owners, we are able to leverage their expertise in many different ways. Manufacturing is one of the most important areas, helping us accelerate our progress and entry into the market with the confidence that Polestar 2 production will begin as planned early next year."
