SK Innovation is aiming to diversify the supply of battery notching equipmentSouth Korean media report that SK Innovation is aiming to diversify the supply of battery notching equipment. Ultimately, this will help the company to ensure stable long-term production of EV batteries from its facilities in China, Hungary, South Korea and the US. According to Elec's sources, SK Innovation is in talks with Mplus which is already supplying battery tab welding and packaging equipment to its Seosan facility. It has also supplied equipment to EVE Energy, which is SK Innovation's joint battery venture in China.

The 50:50 joint venture with EVE Energy was announced a couple of months ago and is part of SK Innovation's plan to invest 575 billion won to build its second EV battery plant in China. The Korean giant will invest US$525 million and the China-based EVE Energy will invest the same amount. The annual production capacity of the future production facility will be 20-25 GWh. SK Inno's first Chinese production facility is in Changzhou and the second is expected to be Yancheng. According to South Korean media, the location is chosen because it is near Kia's plant there which will be restructured to produce more EVs than ICE vehicles. SK Innovation also has a joint venture with Volkswagen for an annual production capacity of 60 GWh in 2022. It is known the VW will use SK Inno's batteries in the upcoming ID.4 SUV.

Other South Korean EV Battery producers are also investing in facilities in China. LG Chem will produce up to 40GWh of EV batteries in China by the end of 2019 and plans to produce a total of 70GWh EV batteries in 2020 after its second plant in Nanjing enters into operation. Samsung SDI is also building a second plant in China (Xi'an).Source
