Samsung SDI places orders for equipment in its second EV battery factory in Goed, HungaryAccording to various Korean media, Samsung SDI has begun placing orders for equipment in its second EV battery factory in Goed, Hungary. The company has decided to invest 1.2 trillion won in the site which will be twice as large as the current Samsung SDI factory in Hungary. It will produce 5th generation batteries for electric vehicles that will offer high energy density thanks to new materials and new production methods. The site will have seven lines for materials and over ten lines for assembly. Upon completion, it will be able to produce 12 million cells per month. The first factory produces 6 million cells per month. Batteries from the second factory will power EVs from BMW, Audi, and Volkswagen. The companies chosen by Samsung SDI for the factory equipment include electrode kit maker CIS, assembly equipment maker Philenergy, formation equipment maker Hana Technology, NCD cathode supplier EcoPro BM, electrolyte supplier Dongwha, cathode and anode producers Shinheung SEC and Singsin EDP.

For the new batteries, Samsung SDI plans to use the stacking method. It has been using the winding method for a long time. The latter wraps a positive electrode material, a separator, and a negative electrode material. One giant cell is rolled up and placed in a rectangular or cylindrical case to make a battery. The stacking method means that individual cells are stacked in such a way as to combine a positive and negative electrode material with a separator. Dozens of cells are stacked to complete one battery thus improving energy density and durability compared to batteries made by using the winding method.

The stacking method tends to become the norm in EV battery production. LG Chem uses a method called "stack and fold" or "lamination and stacking". SK Innovation uses "zig-zag stacking" which stacks alternatively a separator after cutting the electrode into a single sheet without an adhesion process. Source
