SK Innovation expands its investment in its Georgia, US battery plantAt the end of 2018, SK Innovation decided to build a 9.8GWh/year EV battery plant in Commerce, Jackson County, Georgia. After the groundbreaking ceremony in March last year, the plant, which is under construction will be completed in the second half of 2021 and will be ready for mass deliveries in early 2022. Due to the rapidly growing US market, SK Innovation is considering to expand its investment in stages. The company has received additional orders for EV batteries and therefore the possible increase in investment to $5 billion will become a reality. At the SK Night event in November 2018, Choi Tae-won, chairman of SK Group, said: "If the business goes well, we will expand the investment to $5 billion and employ 6,000 people."

The total investment of KRW 1.9 trillion, based on net foreign capital, is the largest in the history of Georgia. It is estimated that more than 2,000 jobs will be created. If further investment is realized, the impact on the state's economy will amount to several tens of trillion won in the coming decades, even considering the backward effect. SK Innovation will be able to secure a stable supply of batteries to nearby global automakers by having the only large battery plant in Georgia. From 2022, the plant's production will be supplied to Volkswagen's plant in nearby Chattanooga, Tennessee.

SK Innovation plans to open the era of a full-fledged "3rd generation electric vehicle" by incorporating cutting-edge battery technology into its Georgia battery plant. The third generation of electric vehicles has a range of more than 500 km on a single charge. SK Innovation has been producing prototypes for 3rd generation EV batteries and will begin mass production in 2022. The company has a number of advantages compared to its competitors. For starters, it is the only Korean manufacturer to produce its own separator by securing Lithium-ion Battery Separator (LiBS) technology and production capacity. Secondly, it has introduced differentiated methods in cell production. By eliminating the gluing process, production steps are reduced, giving it a technical advantage over others in performance and margin. Thirdly, SK Innovation produces cells by cutting electrodes in a single sheet and alternately stacking them with separators (Zigzag Stacking).
