2020 Hyundai IONIQ Electric gets a larger battery, improved range and refreshed designEver since its launch in 2016, Hyundai IONIQ Electric 28 kWh has retained its design and specifications. Until now. The model, which was EPA's most efficient car, got a refresh today along with the other two vehicles from the IONIQ line up. However, we're only interested in the 2020 Hyundai IONIQ Electric. The main upgrade is the battery. The 28 kWh unit from LG Chem is upped to a 38.3 kWh one with the cells offering higher energy density. Hence, the range is improved as well and according to the WLTP cycle, it is estimated to be 294 km. The onboard charger has been improved as well - from 6.6 kW to 7.2 kW. The electric motor power has been increased from 88 kW to 101.5 kW, while the torque and top speed remain the same - 295 Nm and 165 km/h, respectively. Eco+ mode is added to the already available Comfort, Sport and Eco modes. The transmission, steering and suspension seem to be unchanged.

2020 Hyundai IONIQ Electric gets an external and internal update as well. On the outside, there's a new distinctive pattern on the closed grille, an updated front bumper design with a silver-coloured moulding at the bottom, ew anthracite seen on the rear bumper moulding and daytime running light bezels up front. The LED DRLs, LED headlights and LED taillights have been re-designed as well. There are redesigned 16-inch alloy wheels, too. The new IONIQ is available in nine exterior paint colours: Fluidic Metal, Electric Shadow, Liquid Sand, Typhoon Silver, Phantom Black, Polar White, Iron Gray, Intense Blue, Fiery Red.

The interior is available in black cloth as a standard and the leather upholstery has three color options: Black, Gray two-tone, Electric Shadow. The dashboard garnish arrives in Dark Chrome Accent. The new IONIQ Electric features a new 10.25-inch AVN screen, a new heating and climate control panel with touch-type buttons, a high-resolution 7-inch LCD console display with mood lighting, blue ambient lighting across the passenger-side lower dashboard and the centre console.

2020 Hyundai IONIQ Electric features Hyundai Blue Link, a connected vehicle system which uses embedded telematics to allow drivers of IONIQ Electric to remote start and stop, while all versions allow remote lock or unlock and control air conditioning via a smartphone app. A new service is also available with the new IONIQ - eCall, automatically dialling emergency assistance if airbags are deployed or the call button located above the rear-view mirror is pressed. Relevant information (car information, time of the accident, driving direction, airbag and impact sensor information) is sent to the local emergency service. LIVE Services with a five-year free subscription is available when customers include satellite navigation. There's an optional Audio Video Navigation system with Cloud-based voice recognition in six languages.

2020 Hyundai IONIQ Electric arrives with the Hyundai SmartSense technology package includes Front Collision Warning and Avoidance Assist with Pedestrian Detection with new Cyclist Detection ability and Driver Attention Warning. Lane Keeping Assist and High Beam Assist also come standard. Optionally available as well are Lane Following Assist which keeps the car in the middle of a lane so drivers can navigate safely even in heavy traffic during rush hour, and Intelligent Speed Limit Warning that uses the front camera and information from the navigation system to identify road speed signs and displays the speed limit and no-passing signs in real time. Using the radar sensor to detect the distance from the car in front, Smart Cruise Control with Stop&Go and Leading Vehicle Departure Alert maintains a preset distance to automatically stop and depart again according to traffic conditions. Additional options include Blind-Spot Collision Warning and Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Warning.

Below you may enjoy a promo video and some of the official photos of the new model and here's a convenient comparison between the IONIQ Electric 28 kWh and IONIQ Electric 38.3 kWh. The 2020 model will be released in September 2019.
