CATL will build two lithium extraction plants in Bolivia

CATL will build two lithium extraction plants in BoliviaIt was as early as this January that a CATL-led consortium and Bolivia have reached an agreement for the development of lithium in the country. The government-led Yasimientos de Litio Bolivianos has signed this agreement with the consortium to jointly exploit, refine, process, and market lithium resources on January 20.

This past Sunday, the Minister of Hydrocarbons and Energy, Franklin Molina, announced that the Chinese consortium Catl Brunp & CMOC (CBC) raised its investment commitment to USD 1,400 million for the construction of two production plants with Direct Extraction of Lithium (EDL) technology in the Uyuni (Potosí) and Coipasa salt flats (Oruro), which hold 21 million metric tons of lithium resources. This news arrived at the end of his meeting with Yu Bo, CEO of the Investment Committee of the company, where President Luis Arce was also present and confirmed the investment on Twitter.

"We are evaluating the progress of these two projects, the possibility of increasing investments to advance more efficiently and optimize production until 2025", Molina added noting that this investment marks a milestone in the energy history of Bolivia and draws the country a step forward to the energy transition with sovereignty.

CATL is the world's largest lithium battery manufacturer and accounts for 37% of the world market. Some of its major clients are Porche, Tesla, Mercedes Benz, Ford, Volvo, etc. It owns a 66% stake in the Bolivian joint venture CBC. The remaining stake is held by its affiliates CMOC Group and Guangdong Brunp Recycling Technology. CATL and Bolivia have agreed on an approximate production of 200,000 tons per year with an option to increase the investment further. It has also been mentioned that CATL has the technology to develop the project with less water. Moreover, CATL is aware of the tourist potential of Uyuni, and the company will work on engineering the plant in such a way as to not compromise or affect the landscape of the Uyuni region and will make the infrastructure less visible, therefore, it will respect tourism and the environment.Source
