LG Chem will use equipment from Lead China for cylindrical batteries that might be used in Tesla carsAccording to industry insiders, LG Chem will source winding and stacking process equipment from Lead China for its Nanjing battery plant. These are used for cylindrical and pouch type battery production lines. The deal has been confirmed by both companies.

Winding equipment is used to roll up cathode materials, separators, etc. in what is called a jelly roll. The jelly roll is put into a metal cylindrical case to form a cylindrical battery. The stack equipment is used for cutting the battery material and stacking it or folding it in a zigzag manner. Winding and stacking types of equipment are key to making batteries of this specification. They quickly and accurately combine battery materials, which is closely related to yield.

Up to now, LG Chem used mainly Korean equipment such as the one from DA Technology. However, the recent technological prowess of Chinese equipment makers has made possible to diversify procurement sources.

Cylindrical battery winding equipment can also be used for Tesla electric vehicles in the future. LG Chem is supplying Tesla with a 21700 cylinder (21mm diameter, 70mm height) cylindrical battery. Lead China appears to have supplied winding equipment for 18650 cylindrical (18mm diameter, 65mm high) cylindrical batteries. An industry official said, "Lead China can also build 21700-compliant cylindrical battery equipment."
