Volkswagen to buy 20% of Guoxuan - an EV batteries manufacturer in China

17 January 2020, 06:09:20

Volkswagen to buy 20% of Guoxuan - an EV batteries manufacturer in ChinaReuters cites two sources who shared that Volkswagen intends to buy 20% of Guoxuan High-tech Co. Ltd. - a Chinese manufacturer of EV batteries. This will happen in the coming weeks via a discounted private share placement. Reuters estimates that Volkswagen's 20% share will be worth around $560 million is based on the $2.8 billion market capitalization of Guoxuan. Thus it will become the second-largest stakeholder in the Chinese company after the company of its founder Li Zhen - Zhuhai Guoxuan Trading Ltd., which holds 25%.

Obviously, this is one of many other moves to come on behalf of Volkswagen that is related to its global strategy not only to enter but also to become a major player in the electric vehicle market. Last summer, Volkswagen said that it plans to produce around 11.6 million e-cars in China by 2028 as an effect from its strategy to take a leading position in the Chinese EV market. All three Volkswagen joint ventures in China will account to that - FAW-Volkswagen, SAIC VOLKSWAGEN and JAC Volkswagen. When the SAIC VOLKSWAGEN plant in Anting and the FAW-Volkswagen plant in Foshan start producing MEB-based vehicles in 2020, their production capacity will be around 600,000 BEVs per year. VW plans to deliver 400,000 BEVs to Chinese customers in 2020.

With these ambitious plans, it is obvious that Volkswagen wants to secure steady battery supply. CATL is one of the Group's strategic suppliers and VW is also ready to build its own battery plant in China if needed. Currently, having a major in stake in a local battery producer seems to be enough to secure short- and mid-range supplies fro Volkswagen's EV models in China.Source
