GM unveils plans for new EVs and battery techs for 500-600 mi ranges
18 July 2020, 02:35:33
According to GM's 2019 Sustainability Report, the company unveils plans for releasing at least 20 new electric vehicles by 2023. Here they are brand by brand:
Chevrolet
One of the new Chevrolet EVs will be a mid-sized SUV for the US market based on the new BEV3 platform which was unveiled earlier this year together with the new Ultium battery system. Another model will be the Chevrolet BET pickup truck with more than 400 miles of range and the BT1 platform at its core. A third model will be a new Chevrolet Bolt EUV SUV that will resemble the Chevrolet Blazer and will arrive with Cadillac's Super Cruise driver assistance feature. The EUV and the new Bolt EV will be based on the BEV2 platform. The next Chevrolet EV will be a new version of the Bolt EV, launching in 2021 as a 2022 model, followed by the 2022 Bolt EUV, launching Summer 2021.Hummer
Production of the Ultium-powered GMC Hummer EV pickup truck based on the BT1 platform is expected to begin in Fall 2021 at the Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant. There will be a GMC Hummer EV SUV as well. Cadillac Later in 2020, GM plans to reveal the Cadillac Lyriq luxury SUV. In addition, there will be another Cadillac SUV EV with attainable luxury - similar to today's Cadillac XT4 - and aimed at this key global growth segment. Thirdly, the Cadillac brand will introduce the Cadillac Celestiq Statement Vehicle that is an ultra-lux EV with bespoke, hand-assembled craftsmanship and project build rate of only 1.2 vehicles per day. Finally, Cadillac will introduce a globally sized luxury three-row SUV that emphasizes interior space and cargo capability for the modern family. Buick Two new all-electric entries for the Buick portfolio will carry the new face of the brand: 1) a Buick SUV will offer more conventional crossover proportion that maximizes interior space and cargo; 2) a Buick CUV will feature more expressive proportion with a greater emphasis on form and athletic fashion.New Ulthium batteries
General Motors said it is already envisioning a future of zero cobalt and zero nickel batteries. It is working on cathodes that have zero cobalt in order to lower costs and solve potential supply constraints. It is also working on cathodes that have zero nickel, the second most expensive cathode material. Moreover, General Motors is developing cells that are almost twice the energy density of the Ultium battery cell and that could enable 500- to 600-mile ranges. This drive for greater range and lower cost is the key to making EVs for everyone and achieving its vision of a zero-emissions future.
