Stellantis announces a small and affordable E-Car project, will enter production in 2028

Stellantis is setting the stage for a major shift in Europe's urban mobility landscape, announcing a new small and affordable E‑Car project that will enter production in 2028. Positioned as a return to the continent’s tradition of practical, people‑focused vehicles, the initiative aims to revive a segment that has been shrinking for years.

The company says the "E" in E‑Car captures four pillars - European, Emotion, Electric, and Environmental friendliness - a formula designed to resonate with drivers who want compact, stylish, zero‑emission cars built close to home. The European Commission has already highlighted the segment's potential to strengthen regional manufacturing and accelerate the adoption of electric mobility for everyday city use.

Stellantis frames the E‑Car as a modern interpretation of Europe's classic small‑car ethos: innovative, accessible, and engineered for real‑world affordability. It also aligns closely with the group’s broader mission to "move people with brands and products that they love and trust."

CEO Antonio Filosa emphasized that the project taps into Stellantis' deep roots in Europe's small‑car success stories. "Our customers are calling for a revival of small, stylish vehicles, proudly produced in Europe, which are also affordable and environmentally friendly," he said, noting that multiple Stellantis brands will benefit from the new platform. Production will take place at the Pomigliano plant in Italy, beginning in 2028.

Assigning the E‑Car to Pomigliano is more than symbolic. The factory has a long history of building iconic, budget‑friendly models - including the Fiat Panda - and Stellantis expects significant production volumes once the program ramps up.

The upcoming E‑Car family will feature contemporary design and rely on next‑generation BEV technologies developed with strategic partners. Stellantis says this collaboration will help keep costs down while speeding up development, a crucial factor in making small EVs viable for the mass market.
