Volkswagen has begun production of ID.3 components in Germany

Volkswagen has begun production of ID.3 components in GermanyIn the next ten years, the Volkswagen Group will launch 70 pure electric cars on the market. The ID.3 is the first of those. Volkswagen continues heating up the audience about the ID.3 in an informative and detailed style of communication. The latest release from the Group explains which components for the ID.3 are manufactured by the Group and where they are made. VW ID.3 will be presented at the IAA in Frankfurt this September and the car assembly will begin at the end of this year in Zwickau. However, the production of the components will begin these days and Volkswagen has decided to shed some light on this process.

The Wolfsburg has designed and developed the MEB platform, manufactures the drive shafts and tests range and power. The electric drive unit is called Base+ and will be used in every ID. vehicle in Europe and North America. It will be placed on the rear axle and will be manufactured in Hall 1 of the Kassel site, where various motor parts such as rotor and stator, which are manufactured at the component plants in Salzgitter, Poznań and Hanover, will be assembled.

The production of Base + for the pre-series has recently started, and around 1,000 employees are working on the final assembly. In the future, around 2,000 units will be produced every business day, which corresponds to around 500,000 units per year. Together with the Tianjin components plant in China, from 2023 Volkswagen will produce up to 1.4 million units per year. This makes the company one of the largest manufacturers of electric drives worldwide.

Kassel is also where the load-bearing components for the MEB are pressed by means of hot forming, which are processed into finished body parts in the company's own body shop. In addition to parts for the ultrafast frame of the battery box, the damper mounts, cross members and the tunnel are made; here, too, prototype production is already in full swing.

The battery system is manufactured in Braunschweig. The pack looks like a chocolate bar and weighs up to 460 kg. In the future, around 500,000 battery systems will be delivered from Braunschweig to Zwickau each year. More than 200 employees will manufacture battery cases and systems, and more than 100 employees will work in planning and development. Braunschweig has an established site for battery systems ever since the 2013 but foe the MEB battery Volkswagen has built there a new production site that's the size of about nine football fields.

Braunschweig is also where the front and rear axles (axle assemblies) including the chassis components are made. In addition to making 500,000 stator and rotor units per year. the Salzgitter site will also open a pilot plant that will not only recycle batteries but also develop recycling processes for high-voltage batteries.
