Hyundai Motor and SK Innovation chiefs meet to discuss cooperation in the EV marketYonhap and other South Korean news outlets report that the chiefs of Hyundai and SK Innovation have met to discuss future cooperation in the EV market.

The Executive Vice Chairman of Hyundai Motor Group - Chung Euisun, and the Chairman of SK Group - Chey Tae-won have met to discuss cooperation on next-generation EV battery technologies, power management chips, and the battery-as-a-service (Baas) platform. The meeting took place at SK Innovation Co.'s EV battery plant in Seosan, 150 km south of Seoul.

Hyundai Motor already works with SK Innovation using its batteries for Hyundai and Kia PHEV and EV models. In addition, SK Innovation has been appointed by Hyundai as the main supplier for batteries for an upcoming EV based on the electric-global modular platform (E-GMP) which will be available from 2021. At the end of 2019, the two companies signed a USD 8.2 billion deal for batteries for 500,000 EVs over the next five years.

Hyundai Motor's chief has also met with Samsung Group Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong and LG Group Chairman Koo Gwang-mo in May and June, respectively. LG Chem has supplied batteries for the Kona EV and Ioniq Electric. It will also supply batteries for Hyundai's next-generation EV to be launched in 2022. During the meeting with Samsung's chief, both parties have exchanged views on Samsung's development of new all-solid-state battery technology and its future business opportunities.Source
