Porsche demonstrated high-precision production of battery modules in Horná Streda

Porsche has taken a decisive step into its electric future with the launch of a new in‑house battery production facility dedicated to the upcoming Cayenne Electric. The Porsche Smart Battery Shop, located in Horná Streda, Slovakia, marks a major milestone in the company's strategy to expand its expertise in electromobility and secure full control over one of the most critical components of an electric vehicle: the high‑voltage battery.

Developed in close cooperation with Porsche Werkzeugbau GmbH, the new facility brings battery module production directly under Porsche's roof. The location was chosen strategically, as Porsche Werkzeugbau's Technology Center was already established in the same town. This proximity allowed prototype knowledge to flow seamlessly into series production, accelerating development and ensuring consistent quality from the earliest stages.

Construction of the 40,200‑square‑meter production hall began in January 2023, with equipment installation following in September. Thanks to tight coordination between technical development teams in Weissach and production planners in Zuffenhausen, the project advanced at remarkable speed. By May 2024, the first complete battery module rolled off the line - an achievement that underscores Porsche's commitment to rapid innovation.

Inside the Smart Battery Shop, the manufacturing process is a precisely choreographed sequence. Each module consists of 32 individual pouch cells, which undergo rigorous preparation, alignment, and inspection before being stacked and inserted into carriers. Automated laser welding ensures both electrical and mechanical integrity, while foam and thermally conductive materials are added to stabilize the cells and optimize heat dissipation. Four cell stacks are then integrated into a module housing, bonded to cooling plates, sealed with a top plate, and subjected to extensive end‑of‑line testing.

Six of these modules will ultimately form the high‑voltage battery powering the Cayenne Electric. After leaving the Smart Battery Shop, the modules are equipped with high‑voltage cabling by an external supplier and delivered just‑in‑sequence to the assembly line at the Bratislava plant.

Quality assurance is central to the new facility's mission. Real‑time data acquisition provides full transparency across every production step, while all manufacturing information is securely archived in the cloud. This ensures complete traceability for each module, even years after it enters service. Porsche also validates battery performance in its own analysis center, where modules are tested under extreme conditions - including temperatures between 60 and 100 degrees Celsius and immersion tests - to guarantee durability and charging capability.

Environmental responsibility is another pillar of the Smart Battery Shop. The facility incorporates photovoltaic systems, heat pumps, and greened roof surfaces to reduce CO₂ emissions and enhance climate resilience. A dedicated water well further supports sustainable operation and reduces reliance on external resources.

Porsche Werkzeugbau Group GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, operates facilities in Schwarzenberg and Dubnica (Slovakia), where it produces forming and cutting tools for Porsche and other automotive manufacturers. In 2022, the company founded Porsche Smart Battery Shop s.r.o. in Horná Streda, Slovakia, to manufacture battery modules for the new Cayenne Electric. Its scope grew further when Porsche AG acquired V4Drive GmbH from the VARTA AG Group on 4 March 2025, renaming it V4Smart GmbH - a move that once again broadened the Porsche Werkzeugbau Group's operational fields.
