EV sales in the U.S. are booming in Q3 2025

5 October 2025, 10:41:23

EV sales in the U.S. are booming in Q3 2025Electric vehicle (EV) sales in the U.S. are booming - and Tesla and General Motors (GM) are at the front of the pack. Why the sudden surge? Many buyers were racing to take advantage of federal tax credits worth up to $7,500 before they expired in September, thanks to the Trump administration's "One Big Beautiful Bill Act."

Tesla still holds the largest slice of the EV pie, delivering over 497,000 vehicles in Q3 2025.

GM is gaining ground fast, jumping from 8.7% to 13.8% market share this year. In Q3, the Chevrolet Equinox EV is the best-selling non-Tesla EV in the U.S. Cadillac, meanwhile, has three of the 10 best-selling EVs in the luxury segment through the end of September: LYRIQ (#2), OPTIQ (#5), and VISTIQ (#6). Even though GM sold nearly 145,000 EVs this year, they still only make up 6.8% of the company’s total U.S. sales. But GM says it’s in a strong position, offering a wide range of EVs with low incentives and solid pricing. "No one is in a stronger position for a changing U.S. market than GM," said Duncan Aldred, GM senior VP and president of North America.

In Q3 2025, Ford electric vehicles achieved a new quarterly sales record with 30,612 sales (+30.2%). Mustang Mach-E recorded its best-ever quarterly sales since going on sale in 2020: 20,177 (+50.7%). The F-150 Lightning delivered a third-quarter record 10,005 pickups (+39.7%), continuing as America’s best-selling electric pickup.

Hyundai EV sales in Q3 2025 reached new heights, jumping 153% compared with September 2024, with IONIQ 5 retail sales climbing 151% year-over-year and the IONIQ 6 - +36%. Record-breaking total sales for EV, HEV, and electrified vehicles continue to reinforce Hyundai's leadership in sustainable mobility. The same applies to the KIA brand with a strong increase in EV6 and EV9 sales.

Industry experts warn that the end of federal incentives could lead to a slowdown in EV sales. Ford CEO Jim Farley even predicted that EV market share could drop from around 10–12% to just 5%.

So while 2025 has been a banner year for EVs, the road ahead might get bumpier without those government perks.
