Germany increases the number of charging stations and EV incentives

7 November 2019, 06:17:42

Germany increases the number of charging stations and EV incentivesVarious German media reports that the German authorities are seriously discussing various opportunities for stimulating demand for electric vehicles in the country. Representatives of the federal government and the auto industry have attended a four-hour meeting during which concrete steps in that direction have been discussed. Chancellor Angela Merkel, the Ministers for transport, economy and environment as well as the heads of BMW, Bosch, Continental, Daimler and Volkswagen participated in the summit.

According to Lower Saxony's Prime Minister Stephan Weil (SPD) 50,000 new charging stations for electric cars will be built by 2022. Another step is the 50% increase in incentives for owning an electric vehicle. The federal subsidy increases from €4,000 to €6,000. Half of that sum will be paid by the EV manufacturers. This incentive applies to all-electric models that cost less than €40,000. In the future, the incentive will drop to €5,000.

"The industry will participate as it did in the past," said VDA boss Bernd Mattes after the car summit. He spoke of a good meeting with good results.

Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer spoke of a good evening for mobility and a high level of approval for his "Masterplan Charging Infrastructure", with which a nationwide recharge network is to be secured. "No citizen needs to be afraid of the mobility of tomorrow," said the CSU politician.

According to Minister Weil, a timetable has been set out to discuss the necessary changes in labour and social law. This should be made to avoid breaks in this difficult phase of change.Source
