Volvo strikes a deal with CATL and LG Chem for supplying batteries for Polestar and Volvo EVsVolvo has made a "multi-billion dollar" agreement with CATL and LG Chem for long-term supply of lithium-ion batteries for the future Volvo electric cars and Polestar models. The batteries will be fitted on vehicles from the existing CMA modular platform and the upcoming SPA2 modular platform. Vehicles based on the CMA platform include the upcoming all-electric Volvo XC40, Polestar 2 and LYNK & CO models. The Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform will be launched early in the next decade. It currently underpins all Volvo models in the 60 and 90 series. The first Volvo to be launched on SPA2 will be the next generation of the XC90 large SUV.

Volvo's first battery assembly line in Ghent, Belgium is currently in construction and should be ready by the end of the year. The first all-electric model from the brand to be built there is the Volvo XC40. PHEV versions of the model are already built in this plant.

"The future of Volvo Cars is electric and we are firmly committed to moving beyond the internal combustion engine," said HÃ¥kan Samuelsson, President and CEO of Volvo Cars. "Today's agreements with CATL and LG Chem demonstrate how we will reach our ambitious electrification targets."

"With today's agreement we effectively secured our battery supply for the upcoming decade," said Martina Buchhauser, Senior Vice President for Procurement at Volvo Cars. "By having two suppliers available in each region we also ensure that we have flexibility in our supply chain going forward."
