Volkswagen batteries last the life of a car

Volkswagen batteries last the life of a carIn an interview, Frank Bloome, head of Volkswagen's Center of Excellence for Battery Cells, gives some insight into the company's batteries that will power its upcoming BEVs. For starters, he shares that the new vehicles are built around the battery (the MEB platform) and this allows for lots of power to be stored, hence Volkswagen BEVs can achieve ranges of up to 550 km. Mr Bloome continues saying that VW guarantees a minimum capacity of 70% for 8 years or 160,000 km. Of course, this is strongly influenced by how drivers handle their cars. In terms of prolonging battery service life, normal charging is better than DC fast charging and charging up to 80% instead of 100% is better as well. Mr Bloome elaborates on the battery structure that's typical for modern BEVs and continued saying that he expects that the next big breakthrough is expected to happen in the field of solid-state batteries stressing on Volkswagen's partnership in this field with QuantumScape. The company is especially interested in solid-state batteries because they are capable to achieve larger energy densities than Li-Ion batteries, they "are lighter, more economical, and can be charged faster." Mr Bloome expects such batteries to be ready for large-scale production in 2025-2030. The interview continues with a focus on the ecological impact and sustainability and ends with the information that "Volkswagen Group is planning a major e-mobility campaign with nearly 70 electric car models." In order to ensure a steady battery supply, the company has paired with LG Chem and SKI for Europe, SKI for US, and CATL for China as main battery suppliers for VW BEVs in the corresponding markets.Source
