Dongfeng developed a solid-state battery exceeding 1,000 km range and secured related supply chain

Dongfeng Motor has developed a fully independent solid-state battery supply chain, gaining control over key technologies like electrolytes, separators, and in-situ curing. The company has successfully produced solid-state batteries with energy densities of 240Wh/kg and 350Wh/kg, pushing driving range beyond 1,000 kilometers. These batteries are designed for both high energy output and exceptional safety, passing China's GB38031-2020 inspection standards as well as demanding tests including puncture resistance, 50% crush deformation, and exposure to 150°C heat.

The company began its solid-state battery initiative in 2018, forming a dedicated project team to explore both battery and system-level technologies. By mid-2019, Dongfeng had completed its first-generation solid-state battery system and, within a year, integrated it into a functioning vehicle. In early 2022, Dongfeng partnered with a top-tier battery manufacturer to co-develop a high-energy-density solid-state battery, which was successfully deployed in the Dongfeng E70 sedan. Since then, a fleet of 50 demonstration vehicles has logged over 1.5 million kilometers across 10 cities in six provinces.

At the 2024 World Power Battery Conference, Dongfeng showcased its latest generation of solid-state battery technology and flagship models. The new system features battery cells with energy density reaching 285Wh/kg and incorporates a cell-to-pack (CTP) architecture that maximizes space efficiency and lowers material costs. Additional innovations include immersion cooling and a wireless battery management system (BMS), both of which enhance overall performance and reliability.
