Samsung SDI and Glencore sign a 5-year contract for cobalt supplySamsung SDI and Glencore have signed an agreement for a cobalt hydroxide supply according to which Glencore will provide up to 21,000 tonnes of cobalt contained in cobalt hydroxide between 2020 and 2024. The raw material will be sourced from Glencore's DRC site and both companies are committed to ensuring the ethical and responsible production and procurement of cobalt. Both parties agree that Glencore's DRC operations will be independently audited each year against the "Cobalt Refinery Supply Chain Due Diligence Standard". This standard is defined by the Responsible Mining Initiative (RMI).

A couple of months ago, Glencore signed another agreement with a domestic Samsung SDI competitor - SK Innovation. Glencore has agreed to supply to SK Innovation 30,000 tons of cobalt for the period from 2020 to 2025. This is enough to produce batteries for about 3 million pure electric vehicles.

The industry predicts that the global EV battery market will grow at an average annual rate of 25%, to about 182 trillion won by 2025. Accordingly, the demand for cobalt, a key mineral, will also increase. More specifically, it is expected to reach 32,000 tonnes in 2020 and 92,000 tonnes in 2025.
