CATL's first sodium-ion battery will power Chery EV models, ENER-Q battery brand announced
18 April 2023, 05:40:27
CATL's first sodium-ion battery will power Chery EV models. This was announced by CATL on Twitter. At the same time, Chery Auto held a press conference during which it presented its new iCar brand and also confirmed that CATL's first sodium-ion battery will power its EV models including the iCar GT two-door coupe and the iCAR 03. CATL and Chery Auto also jointly announced at the event that the two companies create a new battery brand ENER-Q. The brand will cover all application scenarios of all power types and all-material systems, with high adaptability, high safety, and price-to-product ratio, while CATL sodium-ion batteries will be launched for the first time in Chery models.
The new sodium-ion battery technology was unveiled by the brand in the summer of 2021. The mass production of batteries suitable for commercial use on EVs will begin this year. The award-winning technology breaks the bottleneck of limited raw materials and provides a cost-effective solution. Sodium is 2.3% of the world’s crust. It is over 1000 times more abundant than lithium. The energy density of a Na+ Ion battery cell has reached 160Wh/kg, which is higher than 120-130 Wh/kg, and the company expects to achieve 200 Wh/kg with the second generation product, which is at the level of lithium-acid batteries. Sodium-ion batteries have better safety properties compared to Li-Ion ones. They also record a long life cycle, better low-temperature performance, lower production cost, safer for the environment.
