Audi AI:TRAIL quattro - the off-roader of the future with up to Level 4 autonomous driving

10 September 2019, 06:07:04

Audi AI:TRAIL quattro - the off-roader of the future with up to Level 4 autonomous drivingAudi has unveiled the Audi AI:TRAIL quattro - a concept off-road vehicle that's driven by electricity. The four-seater features a cabin that's made almost entirely of glass and look totally futuristic. The rest is a combination of high-tech steel, aluminium and carbon fibre. As a result, it weighs just 1,750 kg (3,858.09 lb) despite its high-capacity battery. The vehicle has a length of 4.15 m (13.5 ft), a width of 2.15 m (7.05 ft), and a roof height of 1.67 m (5.5 ft). It is adorned with enormous 22-inch wheels with 850 mm (33.5 in) tires for excellent off-road capabilities. The ground clearance is impressive at 34 cm (13.4 in) and the vehicle can ford through water that's more than 50 cm (1.6 ft) deep. The high-ride also ensures that the floor-integrated battery won't suffer from impacts. Bulky transverse links and MacPherson suspension struts with coil springs and adaptive dampers provide suitable robustness and ensure safe driving stability. The tires also feature variable, sensor-controlled air pressure regulation based on optical sensors and electronic stability control (ESC).

What makes the Audi AI:Trail quattro even more futuristics are the five rotorless, triangular, electrically operated drones with integrated matrix LED elements which replace the high and low beams. They are capable of landing on a roof rack or directly on the roof of the vehicle, and docking onto the inductive charging elements. They are called "Audi Light Pathfinders" and work both when the vehicle is on and stationary. The drones are coordinated fully automatically by the AI:TRAIL and their behaviour scenario can be controlled by the software on the passengers' smartphones.

There's the Audi Light Companion as well, which is magnetically attached to the front side of the seat, where it acts as ambient lighting. It can be taken off and used as campfire light or a close-range floodlight via its three-leg stand. Integrated with the car's navigation system, it is capable of projecting directional symbols and even written information onto a route.

The Audi AI:TRAIL is designed for driving on roads up to level 4. Level 4 is the second-highest level on a standardized international scale for increasing automation. Its target range is 400-500 km on roads or easy off-road tracks and 250 km for serious off-road driving. The vehicle has a system power output of 320 kW and 1000 Nm of torque. The top speed is 130 km/h. ( Source
