Ford will build an electric car on VW's MEB platform, both invest in Argo AI

Ford will build an electric car on VW's MEB platform, both invest in Argo AIAs promised, Volkswagen and Ford announce more information about their future cooperation. Herbert Diess (CEO Volkswagen Group) and Jim Hackett (CEO Ford Motor Company) confirmed the two companies are expanding their global cooperation. One of the main focuses is e-mobilty and a second one is autonomous driving.

"While Ford and Volkswagen remain independent competitors their collaboration with Argo AI increases their performance, economies of scale, and geographic reach in the autonomous driving arena. Synergies in several areas of our global collaboration will enable us to wholeheartedly develop smart vehicles for a smart world." Jim Hackett, Ford President and CEO, said.

VW will invest up to US$2.6 billion in autonomous driving and will become an equal partner in Argo AI. Of this, one billion USD will be financial resources. The other US$ 1.6 billion is the evaluation of VW's subsidiary Autonomous Intelligent Driving (AID), which the Group will bring in. In the future, Ford and VW will benefit from both the Argo AI and AID, which alone has gathered around 200 experts on the topic of autonomous driving. In addition, VW will acquire shares in Argo AI for a total of US$500 million from Ford over the next three years. Ford will deposit the remaining US$600 million of its planned $1 billion cash investment into Argo AI. Thus the two companies become equal partners. Argo AI itself, including the full transaction of both companies, is valued at more than US$7 billion.

As part of the investment by VW and the closer cooperation with Ford, the current AID location in Munich will become the European headquarters of Argo AI. In the future, this will be managed by Karlheinz Wurm, currently CEO at AID. Through the merger with Argo AI their existing team grows from 500 employees to about 700 employees worldwide. In addition to the corporate headquarters in Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania) and the Munich office, Argo AI now has five development centers.

Ford will use Volkswagen's MEB platform for its own electric cars. Volkswagen will provide the parts and components for the platform. The vehicle will be for the European market and will be launched in the market in early 2023 and will be developed in the Ford development center in Cologne.
