The Kia Futuron Concept is the design preview of an electric SUV coupe

5 November 2019, 05:37:00

The Kia Futuron Concept is the design preview of an electric SUV coupeKIA has unveiled a new concept vehicle dubbed Futuron and will showcase it during the 2019 China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai starting on November 10th. The Futuron Concept embodies the brand's vision of a modern electric SUV coupe - sports car on an SUV platform. The design steps on two notions - dynamism and purity. Hence, the creation of the "360-degree core" - the achievement of a smooth form without ornaments and an aero-efficient profile due to the sleek and streamlined shape.

The roof is a diamond-shaped panoramic glasshouse which sits atop the 360-degree core. It features a network of LiDAR (light detection and ranging) sensors capable of providing Level 4 autonomous driving features, enabling hands-off and eyes-off driving in most conditions. The front is adorned with Kia's "Star Cloud lighting" - a geometric patchwork of matrix LED lighting, which is also available on the back of the car. The battery is positioned below the cabin and powers four in-wheel electric motors. The elevated stance of the car is therefore matched with a low centre of gravity and a cutting-edge e-AWD system. The vehicle is 4,850 mm long, 1,550 mm high and has a 3,000 mm wheelbase.

The interior is as "futuresque" as the exterior. Kia introduces the "zero-gravity" seating positions for utmost comfort, extended flexibility for the arrangement of the front seats, especially in the era of Level 4 autonomous driving. Inside the surfaces flow into each other just like the outside ones and the in-cabin experience is further enhanced by an interactive ambient lighting system. Moreover, the KIA Futuron Concept offers an AI-operated graphical user interface (GUI) which "flows out of the driver-side door and wraps around the steering wheel in a seamless arc. This merges the instrument cluster directly with the audio-visual display at the center of the dashboard and is linked to the display integrated within the surface of the steering wheel itself."
