LG Chem will supply between 10GWh and 13GWh of EV batteries to Tesla Gigafactory 3

16 March 2020, 06:44:41

LG Chem will supply between 10GWh and 13GWh of EV batteries to Tesla Gigafactory 3Various Korean media report that LG Chem will supply between 10GWh and 13GWh of EV batteries to Tesla for its Gigafactory in China. This exceeds CATL's supply to Tesla in China. Last year LG Chem was approved as a Tesla battery supplier for cylindrical NCM811 batteries. This type of batteries has a ratio of nickel, cobalt, and manganese of 8:1:1. It is characterized by increasing the nickel content to improve energy density and increase range.

Tesla has been receiving batteries from Panasonic in Japan but has started to deal with LG Chem and CATL while pursuing diversification of supply lines. The batteries of both companies were installed in the Model 3 and Model Y for China produced by the Tesla factory in Shanghai.

According to the China Battery Enterprise Alliance, LG Chem ranked third in the EV Batteries market last month with 80.76kWh of batteries installed. All of them are mounted on Chinese models produced at the Tesla Shanghai plant.

As Tesla is expanding its Shanghai plant, LG Chem's supply is expected to expand further. The Shanghai plant production is about 150,000 units per year. The long term aim is to achieve 500,000 units.

LG Chem is also actively investing in local factories in response to increasing orders from China. In 2018, it is constructing a second factory in Nanjing, pouring 2.12 trillion won. It has the capacity to produce 500,000 units of high-performance electric vehicles (320 km driven on a single charge).
