Global EV Battery market share, Korean companies on the rise, CATL and Panasonic lead

10 February 2020, 03:54:17

Global EV Battery market share, Korean companies on the rise, CATL and Panasonic leadSNE Research has come up with the annual global EV battery usage for 2019. The data is based on information about the sales of electric vehicles (EV, PHEV, HEV) in 76 countries across the globe and data on batteries installed in electric vehicles registered during this year. The statistics show that the three major Korean manufacturers have increased their market share in terms of sales.

CATL is on top, followed by Panasonic, but LG Chem now takes third place surging 64.8% year-on-year to 12.3GWh surpassing BYD which is now fourth. Samsung SDI is next moving up one place to the fifth, which is a 20.9% increase to 4.2GWh. The others are AESC, Guoxuan, PEVE, Lishen and at the tenth place is SK Innovation - this is the first time the company makes it to the top 10, recording 1.9GWh, an increase of 2.3 times.

The growth of the three Korean companies was driven by increased sales of models with their own batteries. LG Chem's usage increased sharply as sales of Audi E-Tron, Hyundai Kona EV and Jaguar I-Pace surged. Samsung SDI's growth was fueled by strong sales of Volkswagen e-Golf and BMW i3. SK Innovation posted rapid growth thanks to strong sales of Kia Niro EV and Kia Soul EV.

In 2019, the total amount of battery energy for electric vehicles registered in countries around the world was 116.7 GWh, an increase of 16.7% over the previous year. CATL and Panasonic continued to grow with growth above the market average occupying more than half of the global EV battery market. However, the remaining Chinese and Japanese makers saw their consumption decline or grow below the market average.Source
