Volkswagen's PowerCo produces its first battery cells in the Salzgitter gigafactory

Volkswagen's battery unit PowerCo has begun producing the first "Unified Cells" at its Salzgitter gigafactory, marking the start of large‑scale European battery cell manufacturing and a major step in the group's electrification strategy. The plant is VW's blueprint for future facilities across the continent and as a central element of the brand's ambition to control key technologies in‑house. PowerCo will use the site not only for mass production but also as a hub for digitalized manufacturing and battery research and development.

The Salzgitter facility is designed to reach an annual capacity of up to 40 gigawatt‑hours, a scale that PowerCo says will be sufficient to supply cells for hundreds of thousands of electric vehicles once the ramp‑up is complete. The first cells produced at the plant follow Volkswagen's new Unified Cell format, a standardized design intended to be used across multiple brands and vehicle segments to simplify production and reduce costs. According to the company, the Unified Cell concept is a cornerstone of its strategy to make electric vehicles more affordable and to streamline the group’s battery architecture.

Sustainability and circularity are central themes in PowerCo's presentation of the Salzgitter project. The press release highlights low‑CO₂ production methods and integrated recycling processes aimed at recovering critical raw materials such as lithium, nickel and cobalt, reflecting Volkswagen's stated commitment to a circular economy for battery materials. Executives framed the plant as setting new standards in environmental performance and digital quality control, with the site's systems intended to support efficient scaling while minimizing the carbon footprint of cell production.

Volkswagen leadership described the commissioning as a pivotal moment for the company and for Europe’s industrial landscape. The group positions the Salzgitter gigafactory as a strategic response to global competition in battery manufacturing and as a way to secure a reliable, local supply of cells for its brands. PowerCo's rollout at Salzgitter is expected to feed into series deployment plans for Volkswagen, Škoda and SEAT/CUPRA models in the coming year, with the first deliveries earmarked for road testing and subsequent integration into production vehicles.

While the Salzgitter launch signals a major advance for Volkswagen's battery ambitions, the company acknowledges that full capacity and the broader European gigafactory network will require continued investment and time to scale. For now, the start of production at Salzgitter stands as a tangible demonstration of Volkswagen Group's push to internalize battery technology and to anchor a new chapter of automotive manufacturing in Europe.
