Toyota, Sharp and NEDO will start public road trials of EVs with high-efficiency solar batteriesLater this month, Toyota, Sharp and Nedo will start public road trials of EVs with high-efficiency solar batteries. The goal is to assess the effectiveness of improvements in range and fuel efficiency of such vehicles. The trials will be conducted under various driving conditions in Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture, Tokyo, and other areas. The collected data will be used for the development of an onboard solar recharging system and will be shared with Sharp and Nedo.

Sharp participates with a customized version of its world-class, high-efficiency solar battery cells to create the solar battery panel for the test EVs. These cells are thin films with a depth of 0.03 mm. Toyota participates with its Prius PHV with such solar panels fitted on the roof, hood, rear hatch door, and other parts. The rated power generation output of the demo car is approximately 860 W. In addition, the trail vehicles employ a system that charges the driving battery while the vehicle is parked and also while it's being driven.

The press release states that "by enhancing the solar battery panel's efficiency and expanding its onboard area, Toyota was able to achieve a rated power generation output of around 860 W(4), which is approximately 4.8-times higher in comparison with the commercial model Prius PHV (equipped with a solar charging system)."

NEDO is a national research and development organization that has established the PV-powered Vehicle Strategy Committee with members from the industry (such as Toyota and Sharp) and academia. Its research focuses on solar power systems. Source
