The GM and Samsung SDI venture will produce prismatic EV batteries only

In April 2023, GM and Samsung SDI announced their joint venture will invest more than $3 billion to build a new battery cell manufacturing plant in the United States for the production of both prismatic and cylindrical batteries. However, the latest information coming from the project is that the 4680 cylindrical batteries will be excluded for now and the plant will focus on prismatic cells only. The companies have also updated the initial investment of USD 3 billion to USD 3.5 billion. Moreover, the plant launch date is postponed to 2027 from 2026. The annual capacity is decreased from 30 GWh to 27 GWh. The possibility to produce cylindrical batteries has not been ruled out completely because there's a possibility to expand the annual capacity to 36 GWh, meaning there's a possibility to add one or two production lines for cylindrical cells. The exact reason for changing the production focus has not been unveiled.Related news
