Panasonic develops the 4680 battery cell for TeslaReuters reports that Panasonic develops the new 4680 battery cells for Tesla's vehicles. The information comes from Panasonic's CFO Hirokazu Umeda who shared this information during a briefing earlier today. He also said that Panasonic started working on the 4680 battery immediately after Tesla's Battery Day. Moroever, Panasonic is preparing to set up a prototype production line in parallel. An additional production line at the Nevada factory next year is also in the plans. If achieved, this will increase the factory's capacity by 10% to 38-39 GWh a year by 2022. Mr Umeda also said: "We are targeting a profit margin of around 5% at our Tesla battery business within two to three years."

The new Tesla battery has a tabless cell design. It is bigger in size - 46 mm by 80 mm, hence the name 4680. Compared to Tesla's older cell models it exceeds sixfold their power and fivefold their energy capacity. In terms of range, this would increase it by 16%, according to Tesla. The new cell is also 14% per kWh cheaper to produce.Source
