Report: Samsung SDI will produce Unified Prismatic Cells for Volkswagen

South Korean news outlet The Elec reports that Samsung SDI has won a contract for manufacturing batteries for Volkswagen. According to "people familiar with the matter", the Korean giant will produce a part of VW's self-designed Unified Prismatic Cells. The media speculates that other companies in which Volkswagen has a stake will also contribute to the production of these battery cells. These are Northvolt and China's Gotion High-Tech. Volkswagen is already Samsung SDI's largest customer for EV batteries, accounting for over half of its sales from the business, or around 5 trillion won. BMW accounts for up to 30% of Samsung SDI’s EV battery sales and Stellantis up to 20%. Rivian will also be included in these stats when it launches its vehicles to the market.

Volkswagen has already unveiled its plans to build six battery factories in Europe by 2030 with a total production capacity of 240GWh. The Unified Prismatic Cells will be used on VW EVs from 2023 on and will be used on 80% of all VW EV models by 2030. Meanwhile, Volkswagen will aim to reduce the manufacturing cost of the batteries by 50% over the same time period.Source
