The 2027 BMW i7 is launched as BMW's pinnacle for all-electric luxury
23 April 2026, 07:48:38
BMW has officially unveiled the 2027 BMW 7 Series, and at the center of the global debut are three all‑electric models that redefine the brand's luxury and technological ambitions:
Presented simultaneously in Beijing and New York, the seventh‑generation flagship marks the most significant step yet in bringing Neue Klasse technologies into BMW's existing model range.
The new i7 lineup embodies BMW's vision of zero‑emission luxury without compromising the comfort, performance, and craftsmanship that define the 7 Series. Both variants feature dual electric motors with sound‑isolated mounting for near‑silent operation and standard all‑wheel drive. BMW describes the driving character as "even more effortless," with refined throttle response and a serene, high‑end acoustic experience enhanced by the brand's new HypersonX soundscape.
The range‑topping BMW i7 60 xDrive delivers 536 hp and 549 lb‑ft of torque, enabling a 0–60 mph sprint of about 4.6 seconds and a top speed of 149 mph. The BMW i7 50 xDrive produces 449 hp and 487 lb‑ft, reaching 60 mph in roughly 5.3 seconds. Pricing starts at $106,200 for the i7 50 xDrive and $124,700 for the i7 60 xDrive, each with an additional $1,550 destination charge.
A major technological leap comes from the adoption of BMW's sixth‑generation cylindrical battery cells, integrated into a redesigned high‑voltage battery housing. Usable energy content rises to 112.5 kWh, enabling the i7 60 xDrive to exceed 350 miles of range thanks to higher energy density and improved drivetrain efficiency. Compared to the previous Gen5 prismatic cells, the volumetric energy density of the cylindrical cells is 20% higher.
Charging performance also takes a significant step forward. With a peak rate of up to 250 kW and current delivery of up to 630 amps, the i7 can charge from 10 to 80% in just 28 minutes at compatible DC fast chargers. Every i7 now includes a standard NACS port for seamless access to the Supercharger network, along with adapters for other connector types. BMW's predictive thermal management and charging‑optimized route planning further streamline long‑distance travel.
On the outside, the i7 adopts the new BMW luxury‑class face, a specific interpretation of the Neue Klasse design language. The car's monolithic presence is defined by large, clean surfaces, a vertical, illuminated BMW kidney grille with Iconic Glow, and ultra‑slim light signatures. The grille itself is slimmer and more upright than before, with radar, cameras, and sensors integrated almost invisibly into the surround to keep the front end visually uncluttered.
The optional BMW Individual crystal headlights add a dramatic, almost jewelry‑like signature to the i7's face. Each unit contains 12 crystal glass elements whose diamond cut reflects light in multiple facets, creating a sparkling effect in sunlight and a distinctive light signature at night. During the start‑up animation, the crystals are backlit by LEDs and work in concert with the illuminated grille to deliver a theatrical welcome. The low‑ and high‑beam modules sit lower and further outboard, almost hidden until lit, reinforcing the calm, monolithic impression of the front.
Along the sides, the i7 continues this reductive, sculptural approach. Flush door handles with classical recesses keep the surfaces clean, while a prominent "7" embossed into the B‑pillar is revealed when both doors on one side are open, quietly signaling the car’s flagship status.
At the rear, the i7 mirrors the same clear, reduced design. Completely new, slim rear lights stretch deep into the tail, emphasizing width and stance. Their smoked glass look and internal chrome strips create a precise, high‑quality light pattern even when off. Functional elements such as the trunk unlocking, rear‑view camera, and washer nozzle are integrated almost invisibly into the black section of the lights, allowing the surfaces to remain pure. The new BMW badge is set into a subtle recess between the lamps, while a diffuser‑like lower section adds a technical, modern touch.
For customers who want a sportier edge to their electric limousine, the optional M Sport Package and M Sport Package Professional can be specified on the i7. These bring M‑specific front and rear bumpers with large black sections, prominent air intakes and air curtains, M side skirts, Shadowline trim, and 20‑ or 21‑inch M aerodynamic wheels. The M Sport Package Professional adds a dark BMW M kidney grille Iconic Glow, darkened rear lights, Shadowline crystal headlights, a black M rear spoiler, and an M steering wheel, visually aligning the i7 with BMW’s performance lineage while retaining its all‑electric character.
Paintwork is elevated to an art form with the BMW Individual Dual‑Finish concept, available exclusively for the 7 Series and applied at Plant Dingolfing. In this world‑first process, a matte paint finish in the lower area of the vehicle is paired with a manually applied metallic finish in the upper section of the body. The transition between the two is virtually imperceptible despite the different paint compositions, a testament to the craftsmanship of the more than 20 specialists involved. Each Dual‑Finish i7 spends over 75 hours in the paint shop - almost six times longer than a conventional finish - underscoring the model’s bespoke, luxury positioning.
Inside, the i7 becomes a showcase for Neue Klasse digital technology and BMW's latest thinking on luxury. The centerpiece is BMW Panoramic iDrive with BMW Operating System X, which introduces a new display and control architecture. The instrument panel forms a stage for the "floating" 17.9‑inch Central Display in free‑cut design, positioned ergonomically next to the steering wheel, while the new BMW Passenger Screen debuts as a dedicated front‑passenger display fitted as standard in every 7 Series.
The BMW Panoramic Vision projects content across the full width of the lower windscreen, from A‑pillar to A‑pillar, with driving‑relevant information placed directly in the driver's field of view and additional content visible to all occupants. Above it, the BMW 3D Head‑Up Display projects selected information into the driver's line of sight with precise spatial depth, creating a layered, consistent visual experience. Together with the shy‑tech multifunction steering wheel - whose controls illuminate only when needed - this setup delivers a distinctly future‑oriented cockpit that still feels driver‑centric.
In the rear, the optional BMW Theater Screen transforms the i7 into a private cinema or mobile office. The 31.3‑inch 8K touchscreen folds down from the roof, working in concert with the optional Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System with Dolby Atmos to create an immersive audiovisual environment. An integrated camera enables Zoom video calls, and an HDMI connection allows the screen to function as an extended computer display. Deploying the Theater Screen triggers a choreographed sequence: the sunshades for the side windows, rear window, and the Panoramic Skylounge LED roof are closed and the ambient lighting in the rear compartment is dimmed at the same time, turning the rear cabin into a cocooned lounge.
Lighting plays a central role in the i7's interior atmosphere. A new ambient light strip spans the full width of the cockpit, appearing as a delicate alabaster structure by day and transforming into a subtly dynamic light element at night. Its color and brightness respond to the time of day and can be tailored via My Modes. Additional vertical light elements integrated into the backs of the front seats extend the immersive light mood into the rear, while the Panoramic Skylounge LED roof uses more than 40 LEDs to illuminate a graphic pattern that echoes the seat quilting.
Acoustic comfort and audio performance are equally prioritized - especially relevant in an all‑electric flagship where drivetrain noise is minimal. The i7 comes standard with a Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System with up to 18 speakers and 575 watts, while the optional Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System offers up to 36 speakers and 1,925 watts, plus 4D audio via exciters in the seat backrests.
Material and seating choices reinforce the i7's luxury brief while allowing owners to express their own aesthetic. Standard models feature Veganza upholstery with leather‑like qualities and prominent quilting, while higher trims and BMW Individual options introduce Merino leather in multiple colors, bi‑color combinations, and even a Merino leather/cashmere wool mix. The latter, offered in Smoke White/Atlas Grey or Black/Dark Grey, pairs leather in the upper seat sections with cashmere‑rich cloth in the lower sections that are as tactile as they are visually striking.
Comfort seats with extensive electric adjustment, heating, ventilation, and massage are standard in the front and available in the rear. For those who want a true first‑class experience, the Executive Lounge option for the rear adds an integrated leg rest behind the front passenger seat, a reclining backrest with up to 43° torso angle, and an optional quilted, heated armrest with integrated smartphone tray. The leg rest's calf support is fixed directly to the seat surface without a gap, and the front passenger seat can slide and tilt forward to maximize rear legroom while preserving the driver's view in the mirror.
Everyday usability is enhanced by updated automatic doors with Soft Close and radar‑based collision protection, as well as an optional digital interior mirror that can switch between conventional and camera‑based views - particularly useful when the Theater Screen is in use.
