LG Chem expands Poland plant productivity by 70%According to the latest reports from South Korea, LG Chem has introduced a production process that can increase the production of EV batteries. The new process increases the capacity of the equipment for battery materials. Along with the wide-range and high-speed technologies used in the assembly process, it is expected to help significantly in enhancing battery productivity. According to industry reports from today, LG Chem has recently applied 2,300 liters of mixing equipment to three new production lines in the Wroclaw electric vehicle battery plant in Poland. Previously, 1300 liters were used. The Nanjing plant in China has used 2,300 liter mixing equipment since 2016, but it was not a production line dedicated to electric vehicles. Poland was the first to use large-capacity mixing equipment among the plants for EV batteries.

The mixing is the first step in the battery production process. The slurry is made by mixing the active material, the conductive material, the binder, and the solvent, which are the basis of the material inside the battery, in a certain ratio. This process usually takes 12 hours per line. The larger the capacity, the higher the productivity.

However, it is difficult to increase the capacity, secure material properties and product quality. Because of this, sometimes small capacity mixing equipment is used. Utilizing large-scale mixing equipment means that the recipe is made so that mixing and dispersion can be achieved without harming the material properties. It is a high-level technology that affects productivity.

Currently, LG Chem's Poland plant is in full swing to increase yield. The rate of automation is increasing for high-speed and wide-width technologies. With this large-capacity mixing equipment, it is expected to theoretically improve productivity by more than 70%. LG Chem is paying special attention to its second factory in Poland, which entered mass production last year. Yield stabilization is needed to achieve this year's battery production goal of 110 GWh and 15 trillion won in sales.Source
