LG Chem has become the second largest EV battery manufacturer in China thanks to the Tesla Model 3Korean news outlet The Elec cites Battery China according to which, LG Chem has become the second largest EV battery manufacturer in China surpassing BYD. LG has deployed 2087 MWh of EV batteries from January to May this year. BYD has deployed 1943 MWh and has moved to the third place. This is due mainly to the supply of batteries for the Tesla Model 3 produced in China. LG Chem's Nanjing plant makes 21700 cylindrical batteries for the Shanghai Gigafactory. Model 3 sold more than 10,000 units in March for the first time in China. The sales volume in April shrank to 3,635 units due to the Covid-19 crisis, but in May, 10,951 units were sold. The Nanjing plant plans to make 32 GWh EV batteries by 2023. At the same time, from January to May, the size of the electric vehicle battery market in China decreased by 45.34% compared to the same period last year (23.40 GWh) to 12.79 GWh. CATL, which was ranked first for many years, also recorded 6178 MWh this year, far less than 10,092 MWh last year.Source
