The company said in a statement that this technology "incorporates the driver's patterns into its self-driving behaviour, creating a custom experience for the driver." It incorporates artificial intelligence (AI) within the Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) feature and is planned for selective implementation in future Hyundai and Kia vehicles. With the upcoming Highway Driving Assist system that features automatic lane change assist, SCC-ML achieves Level 2.5 self-driving.

SCC-ML uses sensors, such as the front camera and radar which constantly acquire driving information and send it to the centralized computer. The latter identifies the driver's patterns based on machine-learning and AI. Three main points are taken into account when accessing the driver's patterns: the distance from preceding vehicles, how quickly it accelerates, and how quickly it responds to driving conditions. Based on the assessed driver's driving pattern, the SCC is activated to conduct an autonomous driving that's the most similar to the driver's pattern. In addition, driving conditions and speeds are considered as well. All this information is constantly updated based on the latest data from the sensors. Because the data is different, Hyundai applies a sensor fusion technology. It allows the computer to organize information from multiple signals into a single interface.

"The new SCC-ML improves upon the intelligence of the previous ADAS technology to dramatically improve the practicality of semi-autonomous features," said Woongjun Jang, VP at Hyundai Motor Group. "Hyundai Motor Group will continue the development efforts on innovative AI technologies to lead the industry in the field of autonomous driving."

Hyundai Mobis Co., the manufacturer of auto-parts that's a Hyundai affiliate, has developed Level 2 technology which includes lane change on the highway, highway entry and exit. It should be commercialized this year. Level 3 tests with the M.BILLY autonomous car are already being conducted in Europe, the US and South Korea.

A Level 3 car will allow lane changes and other autonomous driving functions to work without intervention by the driver. A Level 4 vehicle can drive autonomously under limited conditions and will not operate if these conditions are not met. Full autonomous driving is achieved at Level 5.
